Learn the essentials of selecting carpet to transform your space.

Carpet Considerations:

Location

Carpet performance varies based on location traffic. Lightly used areas, like bedrooms, offer many years of exceptional performance with most carpets. For busier areas, opt for densely constructed, lower-pile carpets for better durability against traffic.

Types

There are 3 basic categories of carpet styles: Cut Pile, Loop Pile, Cut-n-Loop Pile. Within each category, there are many options to choose from.

  • Cut Pile will include types such as texture, frieze, and saxony. These products are typically plusher and can come in solid color and multicolor.
  • Loop Pile carpets are as the name says–made from all loop piles. Often, the loops are the same height with others varying in height to create a more textural visual. Loop products offer excellent performance.
  • Cut-n-Loop Pile carpets typically create a patterned appearance. These patterns can range from small geometric patterns to larger botanical patterns and will make a fashion statement in any room of your home.

Fibers

Residential carpets primarily use four fibers: Nylon, Wool, Polyester, and Triexta.

  • Nylon: The best synthetic fiber for carpets, providing exceptional durability with added stain resistance and pet-friendly features due to topical treatments.
  • Wool: A natural fiber that boasts excellent performance and is easy to clean. Although it comes with a slightly higher cost, it provides a longer performance lifespan.
  • Polyester: Known for its value, comes with inherent stain resistance, but its bulkier feel and larger "hand" may result in diminished performance over time.
  • Triexta: Shares characteristics with polyester in terms of stain resistance and a soft feel but performs more like nylon in overall durability.

Carpet Cushion

Selecting a high-quality carpet cushion is crucial for optimal carpet performance. A cushion with density and resiliency ensures that your carpet maintains both performance and comfort, preventing it from bottoming out and enhancing its overall durability.

Installation and Budget

Carpet installation is usually not a DIY project. Consider total project costs, including furniture moving, old carpet removal, and disposal of existing flooring and cushions. Carpet costs vary widely, but you can generally expect a medium-range carpet to be priced at around $5 to $6 per square foot completely installed. We can provide a comprehensive estimate covering all necessary expenses.

Pros

  • Feel: Carpets provide a soft and cozy underfoot experience, adding warmth to any room.
  • Sound: With highly absorbent qualities, carpet helps reduce echo and overall sound in a space.
  • Variety: A vast array of carpet styles caters to different lifestyles, offering options for every taste.
  • Value: Carpet remains a cost-effective choice among floor covering options.

Cons

  • Wear: Carpets may wear over time, especially in high-traffic areas and stairs. Regular professional cleaning will help maintain the appearance.
  • Maintenance: Carpets may need more care. Regular vacuuming, prompt spill treatment, and an 18-month professional cleaning schedule are necessary.
  • Dust and Allergens: Despite trapping dust and allergens, regular vacuuming removes them from the carpet, preventing airborne dispersion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have some unanswered questions? Explore our FAQ’s, give us a call, or drop by our showroom for additional assistance.

What is the best carpet to buy?

Our Design Consultants can guide you in that process, but as a rule, carpet with density will outperform thicker fluffier carpets. Also, each area in your home gets a different usage so a master bedroom and a family room would see different performance. Finally, nylon is the premium fiber used to make carpet that performs best.

Is carpet cushion important?

Most definitely yes! Premium carpet cushion can add years to the life of your carpet. Much like carpet, fluffy cushion will tend to “bottom out” and may not have the resiliency to bounce back after years of usage. In addition, many of the best cushions have a breathable moisture barrier, which will help repel spills.

Will the seams show?

There is no such thing as an invisible seam. Much like the seams you see in clothing or any other fabric where 2 pieces are put together. Certain carpets are much better at masking a seam, while others like lower flatter carpets will be more visible. All our installations are done to the standards set by the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) and most seams will blend in nicely.

I have pets, is carpet a problem?

With technology today, manufacturers are producing carpets that are extremely pet-friendly. Pet stains are warranted and can be cleaned, so choose the right carpet for you and the other members of your family. While no carpet is stain-proof, they are highly stain-resistant, making for years of soft underfoot easy living.

How do I maintain my carpet?

Vacuum regularly. It is recommended twice a week, with a quality vacuum. Vacuuming removes grit and grime that can break down the fibers of your new carpet. Also, professional cleaning is recommended every 12-18 months, to not only keep your carpet fresh and clean but also maintain your warranty. Visit www.iicrc.org to find a certified cleaner near you.

Should I steam clean vs chemical clean my carpet?

The choice between steam cleaning and chemical cleaning depends on the specific product. Following manufacturer recommendations is crucial. Chemical cleaning uses solutions to dissolve stains, while steam cleaning relies on heated water vapor.

How much does carpet cost?

Carpeting costs vary based on carpet type and professional installation. Costs include carpet material, cushions, labor, and transitions. Factors affecting cost include brand, fiber type, quality, color, style, and warranty. Cushion and installation costs vary based on specific factors such as thickness, weight, quality, moisture barrier inclusion, subfloor condition, and complexity, potentially increasing with subfloor preparation.

How do I measure for carpet?

Baker Bros offers free home-measuring service by certified professionals for accurate material ordering and installation. For a DIY estimate, measure each wall and multiply for total square footage. It's recommended to order at least 10% more square footage to account for waste.

How long does the carpet last?

Baker Bros provides carpets with warranties ranging from 1 to 5 stars, lasting from 5 to 25 years with proper maintenance. Maximize carpet lifespan by vacuuming weekly, using floor mats, having professional hot-water extraction cleaning every 12-18 months, and treating stains using approved methods.

What is the difference between low-pile and high-pile carpets?

Carpets consist of fibers sewn into loops or hoops, creating a "pile." High-pile carpets have tall, sparse fibers, while low-pile carpets feature shorter, tightly packed fibers for a smoother appearance. Pile height, density, and texture variation provide diverse options in aesthetics and functionality.

How do I choose a good quality carpet?

Consider personal style preferences and objective quality standards. Factors like fiber type, pile height, density, twist, weight, ply, construction, and warranty coverage contribute to durability and performance. A solid warranty indicates the manufacturer's commitment to quality.

How are carpets installed?

Installation varies based on factors like carpet type, floor type, and room dimensions. Professional installers are recommended for a proper and efficient installation, especially for renovations or home sales. Professional installation enhances the overall appeal and quality of the finished project.

Is carpet good for pets?

Pet owners can install carpets for their pets' comfort, but should consider potential messes. Durable and stain-resistant carpet options like nylon, wool, and olefin can mitigate concerns. These carpets also offer noise reduction and are suitable for homes with multiple or messy pets.
