Before Your Carpet Arrives: Pre-Installation Tips

What, how, and when you should prepare.

Relocate Your Furniture:

  • Remove all furniture and objects from the areas to be carpeted if you have not contracted us to do so.
  • Empty the contents of china cabinets, closets, etc., before the installation.
  • Larger pieces like pianos, pool tables and sleep number beds are your responsibility to move.

Prepare for Old Floor Covering Removal:

  • Discuss removal options with our team.
  • If you prefer to remove your existing floor covering, do it at least one day before installation. Please note that we will not haul away flooring removed by you.
  • Leave tack strips in place and remove staples from the original pad when pulling up old carpet.

Considerations for Baseboards and Moldings:

  • In rare cases, moldings and baseboards may need to be removed for carpet installation.
  • Our installers can do this for an additional charge, but they won't be responsible for damage.
  • Painted baseboards, woodwork, and paint may need retouching after the installation, which is the customer's responsibility.

Caring for Your Carpet

Advice on maintaining and servicing your carpet.

Keeping the carpet clean and vacuuming:

Stop dirt right at the door by using walk-off mats in high-soil areas like backyards and garages. A good vacuum cleaner is essential for maintaining your carpet's appearance and extending its life. Modern vacuums are lighter, stronger, and more convenient. High traffic areas may need more frequent vacuuming, especially with a good beater bar and maximum suction.

Carpet cushion and snag prevention:

Invest in a good carpet cushion to prevent matting and crushing underfoot, providing ventilation for easier and more efficient vacuuming.
Loop style carpets can snag; carefully snip loose yarn flush with the carpet without catching surrounding loops.

Furniture arrangement:

Rearrange heavy furniture periodically to prevent compressing or crushing the carpet pile, which may cause noticeable indentations.

Dealing with spills and professional cleaning:

Act quickly on spills, blotting up as much liquid as possible with a dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, instead use warm water to rinse, and don't over apply stain remover. Professional cleaning every 18-24 months (or more frequently) is required to maintain the manufacturer's warranty.

Read manufacturer's care guidelines:

Treat carpet as a textile product, and follow the care and maintenance guidelines provided by the manufacturer for different fibers, styles, and finishes.

How to Manage Stains

Dry Spills

In the unfortunate event of a dry spill on your carpet, quick action is key. Gently remove any loose debris with a spoon or vacuum cleaner. Avoid rubbing the spill, as this can push it deeper into the carpet fibers. Instead, carefully blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Liquid Spills

Liquid spills demand swift attention to prevent staining. Immediately blot up as much of the liquid as possible using a dry cloth or paper towel. Avoid rubbing, which can spread the spill. Rinse the affected area with warm water, taking care not to use hot water, as it can set the stain. Press clean cloths into the carpet to absorb moisture until the stain is no longer visible.

Bonus Tip

To tackle spills effectively, remember the acronym BLAST – Blot, Lift, Apply, Soak, and Test. Start by blotting the spill with a clean cloth, then lift any remaining debris. Apply a suitable cleaning solution, gently soak the area, and test the solution on an inconspicuous part of the carpet before broader application. This method helps minimize damage and ensures a more effective cleaning process.
